"TOTI
DAL MONTE"
INTERNATIONAL
COMPETITION FOR SINGERS
The "Toti Dal Monte" International
Competition for Singers, inaugurated in 1969 through the efforts of the
Theatre of Treviso, immediately brought itself to the attention of the
musical world by virtue of its prestige and conceptual difference. This
is, in fact, the first competition in Italy and throughout the world to
offer its winners not simply a money prize but also a debut on stage in
the very operas upon which the competition itself is based.
In its 29 editions, this event has
awarded a grand total of 172 singers, many of whom have appeared on the
stages of the best-known theatres around the world. To name just a few
of these winners: Ghena Dimitrova, Mariella Devia, Alida Ferrarini, Ferruccio
Furlanetto, Simone Alaimo, Fiamma Izzo D'Amico, Natale De Carolis, Francesca
Provvisionato and Ildebrando D'Arcangelo.
With the 1996 edition, the Competition
was enriched by the addition of the "Bellusi Spumanti Prize", a scholarship
totalling twelve million lire and made available by the company of that
name in Valdobbiadene. The award will be presented to the best lead singer
in the opera being presented as part of the Competition, a choice made
by the public attending the three subscribed performances.

above: thirty-three (34) years of age (i.e., all candidates must have been
born after 31 December 1963).
Art. 3 - The Competition will
be held at the Teatro Comunale in Treviso from Wednesday, 1 July to Monday,
8 July 1998.
All contestants must be present
in the theatre at 10.00 a.m. on 1 July 1998 for roll call and to be given
an order of appearance in the preliminary audition. No notification will
be sent the candidates regarding this appearance date.
The eliminatory auditions will begin
on Tuesday, 1 July 1998.
Contestants must present some form
of identification (identity card, passport, driving licence, rail pass,
etc.).
Art. 4 - To be admitted to
the Competition, a singer must:
- complete the enclosed application
form;
- enclose a copy of his or her birth
certificate (or some similar document bearing proof that the signature
thereon is authentic);
- enclose a photocopy of the receipt
for payment of the admission fee of one hundred thousand (100,000) Italian
lire, free of all postal charges, in the form of a check, postal money
order payable to: Ente Teatro Comunale - Via A. Diaz, 7 - 31100 Treviso
- ItalyÈ. This application fee is not reimbursable if the singer
fails to appear at the Competition or if his or her application is withdrawn;
- present a curriculum vitae.
Art. 5 - The application form,
together with the documents mentioned in Art. 4, should be sent by registered
mail no later than 8 June 1998 (the postmark will attest to compliance
with this deadline) to this address: Teatro Comunale - via A. Diaz, 7 -
31100 Treviso - Italy. It should be noted that the completed application
form may likewise be sent by fax prior to the singer's official submission.
The Secretarial Office will not
consider applications lacking any of the documentation indicated above,
nor will it accept applications sent after the official deadline.
Art. 6 - Each contestant:
a) must present two arias of his
or her own choice, but not from the opera in competition;
b) may, if at all possible, have
memorised in full the opera in competition.
Contestants may sing the arias they
have chosen in any language whatsoever, while the opera in competition
will be sung in its original language.
Art. 7 - The Competition will
be divided into the following stages:
a) Preliminaries:
- Each contestant will sing one
or both of his or her presented arias and one or more excerpts from the
opera in competition, as chosen by the panel.
The chairman of the panel
of judges, upon consultation with the other members, may bring the audition
to a close at any time unless one-third of the panel wishes the audition
to continue.
b) Quarter-finals:
- The contestant will sing whatever
is
requested by the panel, choosing
from the arias presented and the opera in competition.
c) Semi-finals:
- Contestants will sing excerpts
from the opera in competition, either solo or in groups, and - at the panel's
discretion - they may be heard more than once.
d) Finals:
- Once the semi-finals have finished,
the panel of judges may form one or more complete companies.
The panel will inform contestants
of the formation of the cast at the moment of admission to the finals,
and this formation may be incomplete. In the latter case, contestants will
sing only extracts from the opera, at the panel's discretion.
Art. 8 - The timetable for
the various auditions will be made known by the panel of judges before
the start of each stage in the competition.
Art. 9 - In each of the various
auditions, contestants will be accompanied by a pianist appointed by the
Ente Teatro Comunale of Treviso.
Art. 10 - The winners will
be called to perform their respective roles in a number of performances
(varying from four to six) of the opera "FAUST". This work will be staged
between September and mid-November 1998, including rehears-als and recitals.
Art. 11 - The winners will
take part in the BOTTEGA, a workshop conducted
by Peter Maag for the production of the opera. The BOTTEGA will also feature
a specialisation course for Singers, Conductors and Concert-masters, a
course officially approved by the Veneto Region.
The Theatre Management reserves
the right to allow one or more unplaced finalists to take part in the BOTTEGA.
Winners and finalists may take part
in symphonic and vocal concerts.
Winners must make themselves available
to the Teatro Comunale during this same period for possible performances
in other theatres. In this case, the Teatro Comunale will pay a given sum
for every single performance, as indicated in Art. 13 below.
The winners of the XXX International
Singing Competition must perform in concerts of opera music to be held
in Mogliano Veneto (in the province of Treviso) and possibly in other cities.
Art. 12 - The panel of judges
may decide not to announce any winners for the roles in competition. The
panel cannot proclaim a tie for first place. Upon the panel's suggestion,
the Theatre management may offer a non-subscription performance by non-winning
finalists.
Art. 13 - The winners of the
Competition will be paid for each performance in Italian lire as follows:
- Three million five hundred thousand
(3,500,000) lire for the roles of Faust, Mefistofele, Valentino and Margherita;
- Three million (3,000,000) lire
for the role of Siebel;
- Two million (2,000,000) lire for
the roles of Wagner and Marta.
Art. 14 - The panel of judges
may award certificates of merit to particularly deserving singers who were
admitted to the semi-finals.
Art. 15 - A maximum of up
to five study and professional training grants for a total of six million
five hundred thousand (6,500,000) lire has been established.
The study and professional training
grants have been offered as follows:
- two by the Ente Teatro Comunale
of Treviso (1,500,000 lire each);
- two by the Teatro Sociale of Rovigo
(1,500,000 lire each);
- one grant by Mrs. Caterina Tessari
in memory of her husband Aldo Voltolin (500,000 lire).
The panel of judges will award these
grants, at the same time determining the amount awarded to candidates from
among the non-winning singers who were, nonetheless, admitted to the semi-finals.
The panel will award grades in accordance with the same criteria indicated
in Art. 17.
Art. 16 - Bellussi Spumanti
of Valdobbiadene has made available a prize of twelve million (12,000,000)
lire to be awarded to the best
singer in a leading role as chosen
from among winners of the XXX "Toti Dal Monte" International Singing Competition
(Faust, Mefistofele, Valentino, Margherita and Siebel). Selection of the
award winner will be made by the public present at the three subscription
performances of C. Gounod's "Faust" during the 1998 Autumn Music Festival
of Treviso at the Teatro Comunale of Treviso.
Art. 17 - The panel of judges
shall make its decisions in secret session by majority vote (half plus
one). If the balloting is even, the chairman may cast the deciding vote
if he so chooses. In order for winners to be named, a majority of 2/3 of
the voting members shall be necessary.
Art. 18 - The panel will make
its decisions known to the contestants at the end of each of the four stages:
preliminaries, quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals.
Art. 19 - A copy of the final
minutes (which will be read in public) will be sent to all major theatres
in Italy and abroad.
Art. 20 - Winners of not more
than one previous Competition at the Ente Teatro Comunale of Treviso may
take part in this year's Competition. These candidates will be admitted
directly to the quarter-finals.
Art. 21 - The preliminaries
and the quarter-finals will take place behind closed doors, while the semi-finals
will be open to the public.
Art. 22 - A sum of one hundred
fifty thousand (150,000) lire will be given as reimbursement for expenses
to those contestants admitted to the semi-finals.
An additional sum of one hundred
fifty thousand (150,000) lire will be given as reimbursement for expenses
to those contestants who reach the finals.
Art. 23 - The final composition
of the panel of judges will be made public before the auditions begin.
The timetable and the programme
will be made known to the contestants by the panel of judges.
The panel reserves the right to
make whatever changes it deems necessary.
The order of appearance for the
preliminary audition shall be established by drawing lots (the draw will
be made by one contestant in front of all the others), after which alphabetical
order will be followed.
The contestants are requested not
to leave Treviso during the period of the Competition without first obtaining
permission from the Secretarial Office.
Once the winners have been announced,
they must sign a contract committing them to the performances and rehearsal
period. As far as the performance, rehearsal period and recitals are concerned,
regulations provided in the national contract for the category will apply,
as will likewise apply the specific authority of the President of the Ente
Teatro and the Theatre management in regard both financial matters and
matters of an artistic nature.
Anyone who breaks his or her contractual
obligations will be required to pay a fine equal to twice the established
fee, and that breach of contract will be recorded in a special statement
to be sent to other theatres (see Art. 19 above).
Art. 24 - The rules of the
Competition shall have legal validity as they appear in their Italian text.
Art. 25 - In case of disagreement
or controversy, the Court of Treviso will exercise legal ju-risdiction.
